Abstract:
Students interested in public health and health advocacy must gain an understanding of health literacy in their local community. They should have a multifaceted understanding of local health issues and the impact of physician and patient education on regional issues. The ScholarRX BrickExchange is an online teaching platform that promotes medical learning and provides the tools to bring essential health related knowledge to patients and healthcare providers. This study uses the BrickExchange platform to engage students in writing and publishing new educational Bricks focused on local health issues to increase awareness and health literacy in the community.
Outcomes:
1. Describe key health literacy challenges within their local community and learn about online learning modules to help remove barriers to effective health communication.
2. Learn to the design, write, and publish educational Bricks on the ScholarRX BrickExchange platform that can be used to address region-specific health issues and provide accessible health information for both patients and healthcare providers.
3. Reflect on and assess student engagement in the local and regional community through the development of patient education designed to improve community health outcomes.
