Key Statement:

Learn about maximizing student engagement and learning through OER. Discover the benefits and challenges and learn about how to implement OER in your teaching environment.

Abstract:

Many students face financial constraints while attending university and are unable to afford textbook costs. One solution is using open educational resources (OER) which are free online.

I chose OER in a first-year writing course. I wanted to see if having the textbook from day one would make a difference in engagement and learning. I gave students surveys to find out about their experiences with OER and journaled my own OER experiences including the benefits and challenges.

Come and learn about how to maximize student engagement and learning through OER. Also, discover how to implement OER in your teaching environment.

Learning Outcomes:

Describe where to find OER materials.
Summarize the benefits and challenges of using OER.
Create a plan for how they could use OER in their own teaching environment.

TRANSCRIPT:

Hello, my name is Beth Ernst, and I encourage you to come to my poster presentation to learn more about Open Educational Resources, or OER. I chose OER to use in a first-year Introduction to Business Writing course. I wanted to see if having access to the textbook from day one would make a difference in student engagement and learning. I gave students surveys at the end of the semester to find out about their experiences with OER and journaled my own experiences, including the benefits and challenges I faced. Come and learn what my students said about their OER experiences and about how to maximize student engagement and learning through OER. We can also talk about how you can implement OER in your own teaching environment. I look forward to chatting with you!
